Nature Awareness, Tracking, & Bird Language Course Details

This progressive, immersive training is for anyone seeking a deeper connection to nature, a clearer sense of direction—both literal and personal—and the skills to read the wild like a living language. You’ll learn to track animals, decode subtle changes in the environment, and understand the forest’s early warning system: bird language.

Whether you're new to the woods or refining your awareness as a teacher, guide, or protector, this course will help you see more, hear more, and move with greater intention. Each tier builds on the last, offering more field time, refined observation, and a shift from understanding to embodiment.

1-Day Nature Awareness & Tracking: Awareness & Observation

Overview:
This introduction lays the groundwork for deeper awareness. You’ll begin to understand how tracks, movement, and birdsong tell the story of the land around you. You'll also explore Wild Mindfulness—a calm, focused state used by trackers and scouts across cultures.

Topics Covered:

  • Basic track morphology: heel, toe, register, stride

  • Use of field guides and basic tracking tools

  • Direction of travel and pace analysis

  • Introduction to natural movement and sensory training

  • The “Five Voices” of bird language: song, companion calling, territorial aggression, juvenile begging, and alarm

  • How to observe birds for baseline behavior and disturbances

  • Sit-spot and stillness exercises to attune to the sounds and silences of the forest

Takeaway:
A foundational ability to slow down, perceive more, and begin reading land, weather, and wildlife through tracks and the voice of the birds.

2-Day (Weekend) Nature Awareness & Tracking: Deepen the Dialogue

Overview:
This weekend takes you deeper into the language of the land. Through longer field sessions and guided movement, you’ll begin interpreting not just what’s been left behind—but what’s happening right now. Bird language becomes a key part of the experience, offering insight into predator movement, human presence, and ecological balance.

Topics Covered:

  • Trail patterns, clusters, and animal behavior through tracking

  • Gait analysis and interpreting movement signatures

  • Navigating without a compass using sun, shadow, terrain, and birds

  • In-depth study of American Robin, Sparrow, and Wood Thrush: their habitats, calls, and alarm patterns

  • Baseline behaviors vs. alarm states in birds

  • Mapping bird habitats and how they influence animal activity

  • Tracking predator presence using concentric rings of bird alarms

  • Evening debriefs and sensory reflection

Takeaway:
You’ll develop a field-based literacy in both ground sign and canopy conversations—learning to move through nature as an aware participant rather than a passerby.

5-Day Intensive Nature Awareness & Tracking: Tracking the Outer and Inner Landscape

Overview:
This full immersion moves beyond knowledge into embodiment. For five days, you’ll live in rhythm with the forest—rising to bird calls, walking with foxes and deer, sitting in stillness as birds inform you of what passes nearby. Through deep journaling, intuitive practice, and advanced trail interpretation, you’ll begin to track not just animals, but your own reactions, habits, and thoughts.

Topics Covered:

  • Intuitive tracking and behavioral pattern prediction

  • Seasonal behavior shifts: how birds and animals move through the year

  • Full Bird Language immersion: interpreting layers of alarm, baseline, and silence

  • Mapping disturbance zones using bird feedback and environmental cues

  • Solo sit spots for interpreting the landscape through bird calls and stillness

  • Sensory awareness and natural stealth for blending into the environment

  • Field meteorology and predictive pattern reading

  • Inner landscape tracking: journaling your mental and emotional state while in the field

  • Group trail mapping and final tracking challenge (team or solo)

Takeaway:
This experience leaves you with a new relationship to presence and place. You’ll see the forest not as a background, but as a conversation—one you can finally understand, contribute to, and learn from for the rest of your life.
